A vivid memory

Much of last year is a blur to me. Between working a full-time job, working a part-time job, attending school and, oh yeah, donating my brain cells to the baby growing inside me, my brain was majorly a little bit scattered. But I remember last Thanksgiving quite vividly. I have no idea why, but I remember everything with amazing detail.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, and while I love creating new traditions with Tim, it is hard to be so far away from the family I grew up with. One of us almost always has to work, so we eat a big turkey dinner early in the afternoon and end up stuffed for the rest of the day. Last year, I had to work. This year, he has to work.

Thansgiving day last year started early - I wanted to get a workout in before I was rendered immobile by tryptophan. The weather was A-MAZ-ING - sunny and comfortably cool - and I ran on the campus of the nearby community college. I ran slightly more than four miles, which was the peak of my running last year. I felt great after the run, and after showering, I realized that I was missing a few ingredients for our meal. I headed out to the Winn-Dixie near us and got them, and then I stopped at a gas station to get gas. I splurged and got a pumpkin spice cappaccino, figuring I deserved a reward for my run. It was one of those mornings where I felt bad that the grocery store cashiers and gas station attendants had to work on the holiday, but I was thankful they were there for my last-minute needs.

The turkey took forever to cook. The side dishes were decent. The pumpkin pie was beckoning me the entire time. But Tim and I had a great meal and a great day together. And maybe the clarity that surrounded that day was hormone-related: We found out four days later that I was pregnant.

And this year, like all of the others, we're thankful. The weather was a bit warmer, my run proved that my endurance is lacking, the turkey was ready a bit faster, the side dishes were a bit more pre-prepared. But this year we have our own little turkey, and we'll create new traditions with her (like taking looootttttssssss of photos).
