Dear Elle

Dear Elle,
You're getting old, lady. You're nearly a whopping 12 weeks old, and on Halloween, you'll be a full three months old! You now have eyebrows, which is pretty cool. Your hands are getting huge. Your hair is growing, and your eyes are a definite brownish/hazel color - I must say, they look a lot like mine. You still have your daddy's eyelashes. You seem to have lost interest in rolling from your tummy to your back, but you just started rolling from your back to your tummy, and you are thoroughly content to be on your side at any given time.

You also laughed for the first time! I was playing with one of your favorite elephant toys, and you seemed to think it was hilarious. Rather than just your big smiles, you started to laugh. I caught the end of it on video - you were sneaky and acted like nothing was going on as soon as I got the camera out!

Your dad was in the kitchen, so he got to hear your first laughs, too - it was cool that we were both there for the milestone, and I am looking forward to more chuckles, giggles and chortles :)

You got your shots last week, which seemed to have messed up your stellar sleep schedule. The morning of your shots, we had to wake you up to get ready - and you had slept 10 hours! Usually you get between 7-9 hours, but that night was magical. We were suddenly "those parents" who checked on you to make sure you were still breathing.

Then you got your shots. But we also stopped swaddling you (much to your father's delight). And now you wake up in the middle of the night (much to my dismay). I'm hoping it is just a side effect of getting vaccinations and taking a few doses of Tylenol. I'm ready for you to start sleeping through the night again whenever you are, believe me. Your nap schedule has been completely unpredictable, but you've been napping deeply - I think you were just recovering. We're trying to keep your eating and sleeping schedule as normal as possible, but *something* was off with you, and I think, after three nights of 7+ hours of uninterrupted sleep, that you have returned to normal. You're also falling asleep on your own in the crib - if you're just the right amount of sleepy and we lay you down and walk away for a few minutes, we'll often come back to find you passed out.

You currently are a huge fan of the "ABC song" and "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." I think you like your ABCs because you hear your name ("L") and one of your favorite things to do ("P"). You like it when I sing a silly little song about mommy, daddy, baby and the kitties, and I think you really want to sing along - you make sounds like you're trying to have a conversation with me, trying to repeat "Mama" and "Dada." You're more interested in the books I read to you, and you seem to take more interest in the things around you, which is saying a lot because you've been pretty alert, curious and aware since day one. You're grasping on to things now, moving toys around you and grabbing anything and everything in your reach. During our trip to Ohio (you traveled fantastically!), I and many others observed that you seem to be partial to using your right hand.

On the second part of our trip in Ohio, you showed a new interest in one of your rattles - you light up any time you see "Miss Flower." She was especially concerned about how you were feeling after your shots, and you cooed and smiled at her a lot, even when you didn't seem to be feeling quite yourself. You're scooting around constantly now - when we put you down on your back or belly, we almost always find you facing in an entirely different direction within minutes. You have some hilarious facial expressions, and the way you wake up cracks me up every time: You either grunt and stretch and act like you're extremely annoyed to be awakened, or you're fussy and impatient until you see Daddy or me - then you're all smiles and charm. You're extremely interested in the camera, or even my phone, which I use to take photos of you, and you'll either stare at it in wonder or start hamming it up. You're extremely photogenic!

I started back to work a few days ago, and you spent that first day with your dad. Apparently you alternated between wild fits of fussiness and gigantic grins. You've been with your sitter the last few days, and she says you've been great for her, so apparently you just bottle up your "bad side" for when you're with family - thanks! You seem to be transitioning extremely well, although I have to say I was very eager to spend two days off with you and didn't mind spoiling you a bit with extra cuddles. I can't tell you how hard it is to not know what you're doing all the time now - not know when you're sleeping, where you're sleeping, how long it took you to demolish your last bottle, what toy you're favoring or what you're saying at any given moment

You are becoming more and more of a little person every day, and I love it. I can't believe that you're almost a quarter of a year old - yet it feels like you've been a part of our lives forever!

Love,
Mom
