Our little girl is growing up. If I didn't notice how her long legs dangle out of the stroller on walks, or if I was oblivious to how she goes from crawling to sitting and spins around in two seconds flat, like she's been doing it all her life ... it's apparent in what *isn't* there.
We're in the middle of a significant baby gear transition. (The first of many, I'm sure.) Basically, a massive amount of baby stuff is about to invade our storage unit and join the newborn, 0-3, 3-6 and now a significant amount of 6-9 month clothes. The Boppy, which was used several times a day during our early breastfeeding months, is now packed up. The need for the little plastic bath tub, which initially required the little newborn sling for our slippery young tot, is nearing the end. The infant car seat is about to be traded in for two convertible seats. The jumperoo is hardly used now, passing its peak time of use (for Elle, ages 4-7 months). The bouncy seat will join its cousin, Swing. The Bumbo hasn't been used in months.

| Rockin' the sippy cup. |
There are other signs that Elle's infanthood is quicky fading. The pacifiers are long gone. The nipples that have been worn out on bottles are getting thrown away and not replaced, because she's suddenly (thankfully!) embracing the sippy cup. I purchased a box of breast milk storage bags the other night and realized that they will almost definitely be the last I purchase for quite some time. I plan for a trip we're making this summer and realize it will be the last time I need to travel with the breast pump for the foreseeable future. Elle quickly figures out her new toys and is alllll about the cause-and-effect relationships: press this button, hear this song; pull this knob, watch these lights flash, etc. She's methodical and deliberate with what she plays with and how she plays with it.

The new annoying favorite toy in the house. |
As Elle (rapidly) approaches the one-year mark, I've tried not to be sad about how fast time is going or how big she is getting. I miss certain parts of each age and stage but look forward to each new one even more. I've also preoccupied myself with the fact that she'll be one with the decision to stop pumping at that time. I'll continue to breastfeed her, but people, I hate, hate, hate pumping. That will be one thing I will
not be sad about.
I have to admit, it's a bit emotional to pack away things that she's used for months. Things that might be used for a future sibling but will always have been Elle's first. I can remember how unsure she was of the jumperoo the first time we put her in it. How she was practically swallowed by the bouncy seat during her first days. How we tried four different kinds of sippy cups before she finally started to use one instead of just play with it.
But we've got new toys, new clothes, new gear, new car seats ... new adventures.
getting rid of all that "stuff" was a relief to me, but watching those baby days fade away is very upsetting. :(
ReplyDeleteIt's so interesting to see these milestones from the opposite end of the baby spectrum. While you are putting a bookmark in the life of all of Elle's outgrown things, we're closing the book as Ella outgrows each one. It's really weird to know that our house will never again see the use of the bouncy seat, swing, etc. On the other hand, it helps immensely, when dealing with the not so fun things like teething and sleep issues, to know that it is the last time we will be tackling each obstacle. And each diaper change is one less that we'll ever have to do (until *eek, gasp, heart attack* grandkids come along). I am very much enjoying watching you and Tim begin the chapters that we are finishing--with only the slightest tugging at the heart. I can't wait to see Elle's journey as a big sister (I know, I know...no rushing there LOL)
ReplyDeleteWe're almost exactly at the same stage as you, though Elle is a little ahead of us. It all seems to just pass so quickly. So much change in such a short amount of time.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy every moment!!
Congrats on making it this far breastfeeding, mama! Especially with pumping, which I was never particularly successful at--I've got all the respect in the world for mamas who pump.
ReplyDeleteIt's bittersweet and yet exciting, isn't it? I love every new stage--walking and talking is AMAZING--but I still look at pictures and sigh and "remember when."
Aww, I love this post. :) We are at a pretty similar stage as Elle so I can relate to a lot of these feelings, especially wrestling the 20+ pound monkey during nursing. ;)
ReplyDeleteI give you a lot of credit for pumping this long! I only pump once a week or so(unless i am going out somewhere) and I HATE that!
We also have that super annoying toy, and I know every song and little melody from it, ugh!!
Anyway, great post, as always.
Thanks for the follow! I loved this post as I can see myself having to pack up all those things and go through all the same emotions in my near future. I'm excited to follow your adorable Elle grow up. What part of Ohio did you grow up in? I grew up in the Dayton area but live in Cincy now, but I have also lived in Columbus and went to school in Athens.
ReplyDelete@Basebell - they're flying by, aren't they? :( @Lisa, that's an interesting observation. I never really thought of it that way, although with pregnancies it's possible my next one (God-willing there is a next one) might be the last, and I think that will stir up all sorts of emotion, closing the book on that part of life. And you're right, we *don't* have that approach with the tougher things, but since it's our first time, too, I think that makes them all the more challenging because they're such a mystery - and at least you had experience with two before Ella, haha :) @Megan - exactly. The change isn't spaced out at all! @Valli - Thanks! I hate pumping :) @Genevieve They're crazy monkeys! :) And thanks - I have to pump 1-3 times a day, and I'm soooo over it. DH and I walk around singing stuff from that toy - it's humorous and annoying at the same time. @Tiffany - thanks to you, too! Your son is so stinkin' cute! I grew up outside of Canton, went to school at Kent State and met my husband in Lima ... he is from the Lima area and has a ton of family in Cincy. My sister went to UD and now lives in Columbus ... so we've pretty much covered all of Ohio except the SE corner :)
ReplyDeleteI'm impressed with the sippy cup use! My baby "knows" how to use it, but she thinks it's funny spit. Oh, it's not funny for the clean-up crew. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for following! Elle is absolutely adorable. It's SOOO hard to believe our girls will be one so soon....didn't we just leave the hospital with them?! :)
