Elle has recently become obsessed with pens. This terrifies me, as I've already come home to find her streaked with blue ink, and she has shown a preference for carrying them in her mouth (I keep grimacing at the thought of her tripping or running in to something and have the pen cut her). There's also the whole "let's not invite trouble" with the marking-of-the-furniture angle.
So we decided to try and channel her love of writing utensils toward a safer, more age-appropriate outlet, and I bought her a pad of drawing paper and her first set of crayons (washable, natch). It's been a great way to work with her on colors, and she gets really in to concentrating on her "artwork." I tape the paper to her high chair tray, and she dives in. The creation of her first masterpiece is below:

Kale is pretty obsessed with pencils and chalk these days. We've tried to push the crayons, but nothing makes him smile more than a big ole' piece of pink chalk. Elle looks like quite the serious little artist!
