Saving money: Maternity clothes and other purchases

I buy a lot of stuff online, but I always get the best value possible. I use certain Web sites or certain credit cards to get cash back for my purchases, too. I've already shared my thoughts on saving money through cloth diapering - and some sites and tricks to save money on that, too. But to save money on other baby necessities, I have some other tips/tricks as well.

I've signed up to receive e-mails from several business - Old Navy, Ann Taylor Loft, JCPenney - that have good sales/free shipping and maternity clothes. I've bought a lot of my maternity clothes at consignment sales or Burlington Coat Factory, but for most of my online maternity clothes purchases, I turn to oldnavy.com - but only for the clearance or when there is a sale. Sometimes the clothes run a bit large, but for the most part, I carefully read the reviews, and I've been very happy with my purchases. I would prefer to try on the clothes before I buy anything online, but there are no Old Navy stores near me that carry the maternity clothing, and that seems to be a growing trend with many of the maternity retailers.'

I buy most of my books - pregnancy-related, kids' books, etc. on half.com or used from amazon.com.

When I make my online purchases, I check two sites - ebates.com and my "Shop Discover" site, offered through my Discover credit card. I receive cash back through these sites, but I usually buy through whoever is offering the higher return. (Sometimes ebates.com has 10% cash back deals with Old Navy or JCPenney - other times, Discover is the leader with 5% cash back.) Either way, I get money back, which makes me happy because I'm already saving, especially when I buy things on clearance.

And I never buy anything online without Googling for a coupon code. (You can just enter "Old Navy coupon code" or whatever you're looking for in a search and see if there are current savings codes available.) Retailmenot.com has saved me a ton of money over the last few years. Becoming a member of online pregnancy forums like thebump.com has provided me with alerts to sales, too - if there are special coupons or deals on maternity or baby items, the girls on the boards there usually post about it, which has been helpful for several sales I would have missed.

For savings on other baby purchases, I highly recommend the Baby Bargains book, craigslist, eBay and consignment stores. Love, love, love. It is amazing to see how little use some baby stuff gets (especially clothing) simply because kids grow out of it so fast. Then you score major deals buying it second-hand - but it looks brand-new.
